On a Serious Note- Political Cartoon Exhibition

11th October is  the last day of our Cartoon Exhibition "On a serious Note" at the Nordic Club Gulshan Dhaka .It was  very  different  Experience and full of surprises for me and Sadatuddin Ahmed Amil. If the exhibition didn't take place we had never get to know the level of interest our foreign expat and diplomat community has over Bangladeshi Political Cartoons and Illustrations.  Thanks to Rikke molin and Shannon Karppinen for making this happen from out of the Blue. And special thanks to The Danish Ambassador Ms. Hanne Fugl Eskjær for Opening the Exhibition and Inviting us over tea, It was such a honor to make a caricature of her.

New Comic: Backbechars'Club:2 "Nayeema na Rayeema"

ঢাকা শহরের ভার্সিটি পড়ুয়া একদল ছাত্র ছাত্রী সামির, গামা, রকি, নাইমা ও  প্রধান চরিত্র অনি কে নিয়ে কমিক সিরিজ ব্যাক বেঞ্চারস ক্লাব। ক্লাসের ব্যাকবেঞ্চ থেকে শুরু হয়ে তাদের হাসি ঠাট্টা রঙ তামাসা কখনো জমে ওঠে আবুল মামার টং-এ আবার কখনো বা রিক্সায় চেপে এ শহরের এদিক ওদিক ঘুরে সেই আড্ডা রুপ নেয় ঝগড়া ঝাটি মান অভিমানে।

ঢাকা কমিক্স এর হাত ধরে ব্যাকবেঞ্চারস ক্লাব এর প্রথম পর্ব টি বের হয় ২০১৩ এর ফেব্রুয়ারীর বই মেলাতে।  আর এবার ৩২ পৃষ্ঠা আর চার কালারে বাজারে আসছে
ব্যাক বেঞ্চারস ক্লাবঃ২ "নাইমা না রাইমা"

দৃশ্য পট ঃ
বছরের মাঝখানে অনিদের ক্লাসে ভর্তি হল রাইমা নামের এক চোখ ঝাঁঝাঁলো সুন্দরি। হাঁটা চলা, কথা বলা দেখে তো সবার রাতের ঘুম হারাম। কাজেই ব্যাকবেঞ্ছার'স ক্লাবে ডাকা হল মিটিং এর পর মিটিং!কিন্তু কেউ কিছু বুঝে ওঠার আগেই জমাট বাঁধলো রাইমা-অনির প্রেম কাহিনী।এ দেখে তো ক্লাবের এক মাত্র মেয়ে সদস্য নাইমা রেগে আগুন! এ কিভাবে সম্ভব? এক বছর ধরে তার পেছনে ঝুলে থাকা অনি কে এভাবে কেড়ে নেয়া মেনে নিতে পারলো না সে। তাই প্রতিদন্দী হিসেবে সে বেছে নিল রাইমা কে। শুরু হল নাইমা-অনি-রাইমার ট্রাই এঙ্গেল ওয়ার-এফেয়ার! এদিকে নিজের কাল্পনিক বাবলে আটকে থাকা বেচারা অনি বুঝতে পারে না সে কি করবে? সে কার? নাইমার? না রাইমার?

আমার মনে আছে, আমি যখন কলেজ থেকে ভার্সিটিতে উঠি (খুব বেশীদিন আগের কথা নয়) গোগ্রাসে তখন আমেরিকান "আর্চি" কমিক পড়তা্ম। পড়তে যদিও অনেক জোশ লাগতো তবুও পড়ার মাঝে মাঝে যখন বিভিন্ন সোশ্যাল কন্টেক্সটে মিল খুঁজে পেতাম না বা কোন জোক্স বুঝতাম না তখন মনে হত ইশ এরকম যদি আমাদের একটা বাংলা কমিক থাকতো! আমাদের মতো কাপড়-চোপড়, কিংবা কথা বলার ঢং? কাগজের   পাতায়  চেনা রাস্তা চেনা গলির ছবিতে হারিয়ে যাওয়ার লোভটা জমে ছিল বেশ ক'বছর।
বলা যায় সেই জমে থাকা নেশাটা থেকেই ব্যাকবেঞ্চারস ক্লাব এর কাজ শুরু।আর সুসংবাদ হচ্ছে এই একবছরে যেমন বেড়ে উঠেছে অনি, গামা,রকি, নাইমা ঠিক একই সাথে পেকে উঠেছে আমার হাতও !

Cartoons in Protest!

Once in a while it is always nice to see fast and direct impact  of a cartoon in general people .   A cartoon I did on Saturday night about the news of our social welfare minister using inappropriate language to threaten the journalists went viral through the news paper and  social media on Sunday morning. Today I received this photograph below  from dhaka tribune's sylhet correspondent. Despite the fact that there was  no permission taken  to use the cartoon what so ever,  quite frankly I was delighted to see the cartoon being reused by  sylhety citizens to raise a protest.

In this era of social networking and mobile internet in Bangladesh, it still  fascinates  me the way news and information  passes from cities to cities over moments and  the action people takes with it. People are more aware and out spoken these days about their rights  what I also try promote through my work everyday.


Here is another cartoon I did on the same issue called "The Payback Policy" published in the DhakaTribune today. Its more of a satiric depiction of the new National Broadcast Policy and our social welfare ministers view on it.

''After all the suffering he had to go through while media was making fun of him with his smoking and sleeping disorder issues, he might have looked at the national broadcast policy as his own big''payback'' towards the journalists.''

Trip to Nepal

Last year was the year of understanding for me. In December  2013, I went to Nepal for a 7 day trip with my back back and a sketchbook. its been a while and was going through the sketch book the other day and thought it would be lovely to share it with you all. it was more of  a pilgrimage experience for me as I  myself  traveled for the first time all alone.
